*2-3 minute read*
Do you ever find yourself thinking about just how many hours are between 9am and 6pm?
Don’t worry, you’re not alone!
Most of our days start the same: We get up, we get motivated (whether that’s by the gym, the TV, or the breakfast we eat), and we clock in with all the hopes in the world that TODAY will be the day we check off every task on our list. I mean seriously, we have NINE hours to do this.
Let’s take this one step further. We have as many hours in a day as Beyoncé… need I say more?
While that may be true, the Internet is also a real place that takes a lot of our attention (kind of like how I needed to find that Beyonce GIF to make my point…but also found myself looking at “The 30 Most Mesmerizing Beyonce GIFs”… and yes, they were very mesmerizing.)
Well, step aside Instagram, Twitter, and the plethora of seemingly harmless Buzzfeed articles.
Here are 5 ways to STAY FOCUSED while working:
1.SET CLEAR GOALS
Be realistic with what you can accomplish in your workday. Write down a list of your top priorities for the week. (They say you are 40% more likely to accomplish that which you have written down.) This will help you avoid reacting to every distraction that pops up. Review your list each morning and decide what tasks you can accomplish before you clock out.
2.TURN OFF DISTRACTIONS
Let’s face it, as I said earlier—the Internet is a very real place and she loves to take all of our precious time, but that’s not the only distraction we face throughout the day. Emails, social media, texts, that album Frank Ocean dropped on us in the middle of the night, and even coworkers can all fall into this category. Avoid the temptations and sever those ties. Find a quiet place where you can get in your zone- if this can’t be at your desk; maybe try an empty conference room!
We tend to focus on the things that we find meaningful. Before you start a job, ask yourself why you’re doing it. This will help you keep your vision on the bigger picture, and not just the task at hand. Once you establish why you’re doing what you’re doing, have FUN with it. Use your creative problem solving and imagination throughout the process!
Less is more when it comes to what you need on your desk while working. Too many things within your reach will lead to distractions. Keep what you need neatly piled, along with some water or a snack.
I saved the best for last. Schedule time for breaks throughout your day! Drink your water, bring on your snacks, reply to your texts, catch up on your social feeds, listen to that song that’s been stuck in your head. Whatever you have to do to regain your focus, take a few minutes and do just that! But this is key- know your limit before you start. If you only need 10 minutes- STOP at 10 minutes.
